YouTube Shorts Live Went Quiet? Run This Vertical Live Discovery Checklist First

If your YouTube vertical live (or “Shorts Live”) session feels quiet, start here — not with algorithm lore. This page is a Help-cited eligibility, setup, and analytics checklist for Shorts-feed / vertical live discovery. It does not invent reach cuts, shadowbans, or “they killed my reach” claims.

TRIFACTOR: Exposure (a focused diagnostic — not a full Shorts growth system).

Primary Help: Watch & interact with vertical live streams · Get started with live streaming · See your live stream’s metrics · Manage live stream settings · Learn about live streams

What “Shorts Live / vertical live” means on YouTube

On YouTube Help, a vertical live stream is filmed more tall than wide. Viewers on mobile can enter a full-screen vertical viewing experience with a scrollable live feed (chat, Super Chat / Stickers, memberships where eligible). Viewers can also find these lives while browsing YouTube Shorts. (Get started with live streaming; Watch & interact with vertical live streams)

YouTube’s feature comparison is explicit:

FeatureHorizontal live streamsVertical live feed
Discoverable in the Shorts feedNoYes

(Get started with live streaming — feature table)

Separately: Scheduled live streams, Premieres, and horizontal live streams won’t appear in Shorts. (Learn about live streams; scheduled / Premieres also called out in Watch & interact with vertical live streams)

Do not confuse vertical Live discovery with posting VOD Shorts after a stream. This checklist is about live eligibility for the vertical live / Shorts live surface — not a VOD Shorts packaging system (see Related LCI reading).

Checklist: Are you even eligible for Shorts-feed discovery?

Run these seven checks before assuming a discovery failure.

Part-timer triage (≈5–10 minutes)

If you only have a short window, run in this order:

  1. Privacy (check 7) — public vs private / unlisted / members-only.
  2. Exclusions (check 4) — scheduled or Premiere?
  3. Format / Dual stream (checks 1–2) — vertical or Dual on before go-live?
  4. Surface sanity (check 5) — checking from phone app, not tablet/desktop-only.
  5. Analytics (after 24h) — vertical-only metrics, not combined Live Control Room.

Channel basics (check 6) and Encoder dual path (check 3) only if you already know live is enabled and you actually use a third-party dual-key setup.

1. Format — vertical or dual-stream vertical output?

If you only sent 16:9 and Dual stream was off, quiet Shorts-feed discovery is expected — not mysterious.

2. Dual stream (Live Control Room)

By default, lives from the Live Control Room go out in both horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16). The vertical stream is a center crop of the horizontal stream.

  • In Live Control Room → Stream tab → Stream settings: is Dual stream on?
  • If Dual stream is off, a vertical stream is not created from the horizontal live.
  • You can’t add the vertical format once the stream has started. (Get started with live streaming)

Turn Dual stream on before go-live if you want Shorts-feed eligibility via the default crop path.

Cross-ref → check 4: Dual stream on a scheduled event or Premiere does not put you in the Shorts / vertical live feed. Dual on ≠ Shorts feed when the scheduled / Premiere exclusion applies.

3. Encoder dual path (third-party) — only if your setup offers it

Use this path only if you edit both layouts through a third-party encoder and your Live Control Room exposes the Encoder / second-key dual path. Not every account or UI shows this option — skip this check if you stream Dual via the default Live Control Room crop (check 2).

When the Encoder dual path is available:

  1. Live Control Room → Stream tab.
  2. From the vertical preview, set Auto → Encoder; choose RTMP(S) for third-party dual streaming.
  3. Select the second stream key for the vertical stream.
  4. Confirm vertical and horizontal content match and that the correct formats go to the corresponding keys.
  5. Go live from YouTube Studio.

(Get started with live streaming)

Wrong key mapping or mismatched feeds = you may think you “went vertical” when the Shorts surface never received a valid vertical stream.

4. Exclusions — scheduled lives, Premieres, and audience locks

Scheduled live streams and Premieres won’t show up in the vertical live feed. (Watch & interact with vertical live streams; Learn about live streams)

If you scheduled the session or ran it as a Premiere, absence from the vertical live / Shorts live surface is by design in Help — not evidence of a reach penalty.

Cross-ref ← check 2: Turning Dual stream on does not override this exclusion. Dual on a scheduled event ≠ Shorts feed.

  • Members-only (audience lock): Help’s Shorts / vertical exclusion list names scheduled, Premieres, and horizontal — not members-only by that quote. LCI inference: a members-only live is not a public discovery product; do not expect Shorts-feed discovery.

5. Surface — YouTube app (not tablets)

The vertical live feed is only available on the YouTube app and is not currently available on tablets. Viewers can enter it while browsing live streams or Shorts, or by pausing a Short and tapping the Live button. (Watch & interact with vertical live streams)

Checking discovery from a tablet or desktop-only session will not show the same surface.

6. Channel basics (live eligibility)

To live stream at all, Help requires: no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and a verified channel. You must be at least 16 to live stream (additional notes apply for streams featuring 13–15 year olds). (Get started with live streaming)

If live is restricted or unverified, fix channel status first — Shorts-feed live discovery is not the next problem.

7. Privacy — public vs unlisted / private

Stream privacy can be public, private, or unlisted (defaults differ by age). (Manage live stream settings)

  • Private: not a public discovery product — do not expect Shorts-feed / vertical live discovery.
  • Unlisted: Help lists unlisted as a privacy option but does not state that unlisted lives are excluded from Shorts / vertical discovery. LCI inference: treat unlisted as non-public for discovery expectations — not a Help-cited Shorts exclusion.

Checklist: Are you reading the right analytics?

Quiet feeling often comes from reading the wrong numbers.

Combined vs vertical-only metrics

When you stream horizontal and vertical (dual stream), Live Control Room metrics are automatically combined. Metrics for just the vertical stream become available 24 hours after the stream ends. (Get started with live streaming; See your live stream’s metrics)

Judging Shorts-feed performance from combined concurrent viewers during the stream mixes watch-page / horizontal viewers with vertical feed viewers.

How to open vertical-only metrics (Help steps)

After the stream has ended at least 24 hours:

  1. YouTube Studio (computer) → Content → Live tab → select that live.
  2. Analytics → Advanced mode (top right).
  3. Under Breakdown, open the dropdown → select Playback location.
  4. Set the date range to a period longer than the first 24 hours.
  5. Check Vertical live feed — metrics for just the vertical stream.

(See your live stream’s metrics)

Traffic sources for vertical Live

Help points creators to traffic sources for how viewers discover vertical Live, including playback location and sources in the traffic source section of Vertical Live Feed. (Manage live stream settings)

Use Studio’s Vertical Live Feed / traffic source reporting, and rely on the source labels YouTube actually shows.

If eligibility checks pass and vertical metrics (after 24h) are still thin: treat that as a performance / Exposure problem (schedule, offer, outbound Shorts strategy) — next step: TRIFACTOR Exposure and the Related Shorts pages below. See FAQ for the shadowban question.

What this page will not do

  • No full Shorts VOD growth system. Packaging, hooks, and posting cadence are covered on our Exposure and Shorts pages.
  • No Twitch workflow rewrite. Dual-home and Twitch↔YouTube process are covered on the dedicated workflow and “why YouTube” pages.
  • No invented eligibility thresholds (subscriber floors for Shorts live discovery, secret “boost,” etc.) beyond what Help states.
  • No algorithm-cut thesis. This page stays on eligibility, setup, and analytics.

FAQ

Do horizontal lives show in Shorts?

No. Horizontal live streams are not discoverable in the Shorts feed. Vertical live feed is. (Get started with live streaming; Learn about live streams)

Do scheduled lives or Premieres show in the vertical live feed?

No. Scheduled live streams and Premieres won’t show up in the vertical live feed / won’t appear in Shorts per Help. (Watch & interact with vertical live streams; Learn about live streams)

When can I see vertical-only metrics?

24 hours after the dual (horizontal + vertical) stream ends. Live Control Room shows combined metrics until then; use Analytics → Advanced mode → Playback location → Vertical live feed. (Get started with live streaming; See your live stream’s metrics)

Is a quiet vertical live proof of a shadowban?

Not a conclusion LCI will make. Community “went quiet” stories are anecdotal. Run the eligibility and analytics checklist first. If setup and measurement check out, treat thin discovery as an Exposure / content problem — not invented platform punishment.
